October 2008

We are now working with
Community Ed for the 2009 Season. Look in their catalogue this December to sign up for our April 2009 opening of the garden season, or contact them at 734-429-8020. We are also looking for volunteers to work on our committee from the Saline Community- gardeners or not are welcome to join us, we need help with secretarial work, maintenance, planning, and offering of any classes for summer 2009. Please contact us for more information on joining our committee!
September 2008

We are winding down our second successful season - thank you to everyone who participated or helped out at the garden! This year we doubled the number of plots, added a pumpkin patch, and had a pathway installed from the parking lot up to the garden - what a year! For the 2009 garden season, we have partnered up with Saline Community Education. Check back here for more details soon!
August 2008

Thanks to the help of one of the garden members, we now have two more large compost bins! Any plant material removed from the plots should be place into one of the four compost containers, and water should be added if they seem dry.
April 2008

The garden plots are full for this year. We've begun work already moving 40 yards of soil into the new beds (and topping off the old ones). Our garden 'opening' date is set for May 10 at 10am where new garden members will be meeting, getting information for the year, and then being taught by a master gardener about how to begin planting in their beds and answering any questions.

Also, we need volunteers for this years garden committee- please let us know if you'd like to join in, green thumb is not a requirement!!
March 2008

Applications are coming in! There is very limited availability at this point, but
we're still taking them. If you have turned in an application, look for contact from us in the next couple of weeks with information on what plot you have received, and other important information. If you have been put on a wait-list, there will also be information about another garden location if you are interested.

As always, we are looking for volunteers, if you would like to help, we are specifically looking for help with treasury/bookkeeping/fundraising and work with non profit status. But, any skills are welcome! Please contact us if you are interested!

Also, check the calendar, dates are beginning to form for this spring and summer's events. Most importantly we will need help for our soil delivery in April- bring your shovels and wheelbarrows!
February 2008

We are off to a great start on our second year! We have started the installation of the 14 new raised beds, and are looking forward to filling them with compost soon!

If you are interested in applying for a garden plot for the 2008 season, please download and mail in the
2008 Application Form.
Mail applications to Jody Roberts, 5947 Silver Maple Drive, Ann Arbor MI, 48108 beginning March 1st, 2008.
November 2007

Thank you for an incredible year! We've had an amazing time building community, growing fabulous food, and sharing it with others. Thank you for all of the produce you have donated to the hungry this year with Food Gatherers! Great job!!

Saturday November 3 was the close of our season! It was also the day of our final workday for 2007 - building more beds and a pumpkin patch for next year. Thank you to everyone that came to help screw beds together, sink posts, and assemble the butterfly houses!

The new beds include 6 brand new 10x10 family sized plots, several more of the 4x10 beds, and we hope to find a builder for more of the raised accessible 4x6 beds as well! The new pumpkin patch will be fenced, and allow all of us to grow our own pumpkins next year, while still being able to grow veggies in our plots.

The new walking labyrinth is installed! It is amazing- give it a try, it should take you about 15 minutes to walk the entire path. Check out some
photos of it here
October 2007

If you want to roll over your deposit for next year and keep your bed (or move into one of the larger family beds, or a raised accessible bed)- please contact Jody our secretary. If you would like to get your deposit back, and not continue, or if you want to donate the deposit to the garden for expansion, yet not continue, also email her to let her know. Refunds will come to you after your bed has been cleaned up, at the final workday, the FIRST SATURDAY IN NOVEMBER at 11 AM.

Garden Expansion Meeting! We are planning the garden expansion right now and waiting on the very final approval from the school. They really liked our design, which expands upon our current design with another larger circle around the two existing ones. It will include more 4x10 beds, six large 10x10 family sized garden plots, two more accessible beds, and a fenced pumpkin patch. We are also looking to build a labyrinth which was a complete donation from members of the community. That will sit north of the garden. We will be having a meeting to look over the design and plan the actual construction (two phases this time, build boxes in fall, put in soil in spring). We will need help planning this first phase. All garden members are welcome to attend committee meetings. We will be meeting just before the garden potluck, this coming saturday the 6th, at 1130am.

Garden Potluck Reminder- we will be having our community garden potluck to visit and share with each other- this Saturday October 6th at noon (til about 2). Please come and bring all of your utensils, drinks, and a dish to pass. Very informal, picnic style gathering.

Many thanks to all of you for taking great care of your beds and for those of you that have helped on the maintaining of the community spaces, mowing, etc. I received many compliments of the garden this week and you all deserve a big THANK YOU! for your efforts:)
September 2007

School is back in session, and we still have several weeks left of good gardening. The survey is out, and is required to do for the funding we got through the county.

We are having a garden committee meeting on Monday (the 10th) at 7pm at the garden. All members are welcome! We'll be discussing plans for the upcoming potluck on October 6th, and plans for next year/fundraising.

There was a lovely article written about the garden in the master gardener newsletter- if anyone is interested you can read it at the link below (it's the most recent edition).
Master Gardener Newsletters
August 2007

We are going to spend time over the next six weeks or so working on a more formal set of rules and regulations for the garden, more than what we had in that first pamphlet back in spring. At the next meeting we'll go over them and hope to then put something on the website for all to review. If you have any suggestions, feel free to pass them on.

If you intend to keep your plot for next year, we will not refund your deposit, but instead just roll it over in to next year. That will keep things simpler for everyone.

For our funding from the county, we are required to do one survey in early september. It will available at the garden, and online to email back. We also will be questioning you all a bit later as to if you intend to continue into next year, and what you'd like to see happen for next years additions. We're trying to sort out when we should have applications due for returning members, and new members, and your suggestions are welcome.

Here are no other meetings planned except the following: A committee member in september, and a garden potluck on Saturday October 6, and the final 'workday' clean up and deposit refunds, November 3.
July 2007

The garden is doing just great! Thank you all for your efforts in keeping things weed free, and healthy! If you wanted to donate any of your produce to food gatherers, Scott Lemm will be at the garden every Tuesday night at 6pm and then will be dropping it off at FG.

Wednesday evening July 18 is the local history class in the old school house- it looks to be incredibly interesting. If you want to sign up, go to community ed.

Coming up in August will be the vegetable art contest. If any of you would like to be a part of that, Cindy is planning an evening at the garden to work on the vegetable art. Look for that date to come soon.

We will be having a committee meeting, Monday evening at 7pm, the 30 of July- any members of the garden (on the committee or not) are welcome to attend. I think we'll skip the August workday as so many will be out of town that weekend.
June 2007

The new Saline Community Garden Message Center is up - thank you to everyone involved in making that happen! Posted on the new message center is information on the upcoming art and history classes, free art classes for children in the community garden gazebo this summer, and information on each of the historic figures the beds are named after!

All of the garden plots are doing very well - all of the plants look great! The garden members have done a really wonderful job of planting and maintaining their beds! Feel free to visit the garden, or
check out the photos of cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, squash, peppers and beets, as well as many other veggies and herbs!
May 2007

Thank you to everyone that was able to come out to our grand opening dedication ceremony in May - we had wonderful weather and a great time, with live music, some historical information, and great food!

The Saline Area Schools have graciously donated a wooden gazebo to the garden. In its previous location behind Houghton school, it wasn't getting much use, and we were trying to acquire a gazebo within our small budget. The schools wanted to help us out again, and thought that their gazebo might be more useful at the garden - we just needed to figure out how to move the thing! No problem. David Rhoads figured out how to make it happen with a couple of forklifts and a large truck -
check out the photos of the gazebo move - with police escort and everything!

We had another successful work day on May 5 - most of the garden members met and the committee positions were filled! Following the meeting, we finished moving the rest of the compost, and positioned the new compost bins that were donated. Finally, a few new flower beds were planted, and the picnic table and benches arrived -
check out the photos. Thanks to all of the volunteers!

Our next work day is scheduled for Saturday June 2 - garden bed and grounds maintenance and a checkup to see how everyone's planting are coming. Don't forget to mark your calendars for the Grand Opening on May 20 - 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with a dedication at 1:30 p.m.

If you would like to volunteer to help us with garden planning or grounds keeping,
let us know!
April 2007

The excitement continues! We had a successful work day on April 14 - the compost was delivery on Friday April 13, the beds were all tilled, and thanks to several volunteers, most of the beds were filled!
Check out some of the pictures from the event!

Our next work day is scheduled for Saturday May 5 - and we are planning to have a garden member orientation at 9 a.m. Also, don't forget to mark your calendars for the Grand Opening on May 20 - 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., with a dedication at 1:30 p.m.

If you would like to volunteer to help us finish up filling the beds with compost,
let us know!
March 2007

We have received many garden plot applications already, and it looks like we have filled all of the available spaces! We are so excited to have such an enthusiastic response to the garden! We are still looking for people to get involved with the project, who can help on the work days, or would like to take any of the classes offered.

Garden construction has begun!
Check out some photos of the last monthly work day, where we built and placed the raised bed frames. Thanks to everyone that came out to help!

The word is getting out! Flyers, brochures and applications are posted at various downtown locations, City Hall, Brecon Village, and the Saline District Library. Applications are already arriving, we encourage you to
apply soon!

The Saline District Library has created a beautiful display about the garden -
check it out! There are lots of great gardening books and applications for the garden available at the display, so be sure to stop by during your next visit.
